Play Dates & Play Mates

Chances are, that if your toddler is enrolled in a playgroup, preschool, or has siblings/cousins around, you have probably received the occasional playdate invitation. There are a few places in the desert that are toddler friendly and inviting for toddlers and their parents/guardians. These options depend on how well you know the person you made a playdate with.

Let’s say you’ve recently joined a Mommy & Me class and someone asks you to do a playdate. Your kiddos get along swimmingly, so why not? Make a date for the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert. It is a neutral setting and they have a toddler section with SO much to do that the littles could go for hours. It is time full of learning opportunities to build confidence, engage, laugh, read, play in- or out-doors, and learn. The little ones will get their social fill. Plus, they tend to sleep a little better when they’re all played out.

If you want to make a playdate with someone that you know a little better and are comfortable with, your next playdate can be at your house. I know, I know, but listen, here are the benefits. You put a time on it. It’s a controlled environment, yours! You know where everything is. You know what food is around for snack time. Just make sure you express your expectations (lay down the rules) as well as any of junior’s shareable toys/activities and books. Junior is going to be just fine under his own roof. Everything is familiar and your routine isn’t too out of the ordinary. You are in control of it all.

Finally, one of my faves for a playdate is at a favorite park. Duh. Dress accordingly, bring snacks & drinks, make sure everyone is rested, clean-diapered and working on a semi-full belly. The park is always fun. Bring sand toys, bring water toys, bring dress up items, bring art supplies, a pet, a wagon or chase them around the toddler gym!
And always remember to have fun making new friends and making happy memories!
