As a parent of a child with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and auditory processing difficulties, who I did not want to medicate, I have had the privilege to do a lot of my own research into alternative therapies. We have done occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive therapies, neurofeedback and developmental reflex integration therapies. Because of my background as a physician I have been privy to more information than the average parent as far as studies and the ability to evaluate these interventions.
In one of my most recent self-education adventures, I was intrigued by the work of a company out of Newport Beach, Waveneuro, who have developed customized trans cranial magnetic stimulation for a variety of Mental and Neurodevelopmental conditions. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is non-invasive, has FDA approval, and has been utilized for years for drug resistant depression. Waveneuro’s work uses the same TCM technology but individualizes the treatment to patients based on their EEGs (brain wave patterns) creating custom therapy protocols called MeRT. Although they did not have specific protocols for ADD, they had some very interesting data on Autism. The preliminary results they have seen with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) specifically in sleep, speech development, communication and eye contact are very promising.
Dr. Jeralyn Brossfield of Brain Health Restoration in Rancho Mirage has been using these customized MeRT protocols to treat PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia and cognitive decline for the last year. When I asked her why she didn’t treat kids her reply was that she didn’t have a physician who could oversee the pediatric patients. Having read and seen the difference the treatment can make I am excited to say I will be working with The Brain Health Restoration Center to expand the current practice and bring the Autistic Spectrum Disorders treatment protocol to our community.
