Greetings parents and kids! Officer Friendly here with some helpful tips on protecting yourself from fire danger. It may not be you that has the fire danger, but it might be the neighbor in the apartment next to you, or a house near you.

Here are a few HOT tips for you to keep in mind:
• Small Children/Infants – Do you know who will get the kids out of the house safely in case of a fire? Make a plan to assist small children and infants by designating a family member to check on specific kids. Always have a back-up plan in case you need it.
• Special Needs – If you have children or adults with special needs, make sure you know how to assist them on safe exits. If you have a two-story house or live in a second level apartment, consider having a ladder available, or alternative, for emergency exits if you get trapped upstairs.
• Escape Routes – Make a fun and easy to understand escape route for your young children. Practice evacuating your house so every member knows what to do before an emergency happens. Know how to escape from every room in the home.
• STOP, DROP & ROLL – You know the drill, STOP, DROP & ROLL. If clothes catch on fire, this is what you should do.
• Get Out and Stay Out – Get out of the home as soon as possible and don’t go back inside. Have a designated meeting area and stay there, even if you forgot something DON’T GO BACK! Only professional firefighters should enter a building on fire.
• Fire Alarms/Extinguishers – Do you and your kids know how to pull a fire alarm or use a fire extinguisher? If you are trapped inside, these are important tools to help you stay safe.
• Smoke Protection – If you are trapped in a room, call 911, cover vents, cover cracks in doors, stay low and wait for help if you can’t escape.
Stay Safe! – Officer Friendly!
