Fun Family Events in March & April

March and April are the rewards for living here during blistering hot summers, as they are BEAUTIFUL months with beautiful weather, yielding great events. Here are a few for your family to consider:

March 2 and 3 – Reptilian Expo at the San Bernardino Fair in Victorville brings two buildings of reptiles, amphibians, arachnids in shows and exhibits and provides everything you need to bring one of these friends home. The expo is 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Just a short drive away!

March 2 – The Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival. Due to the government shutdown, this year’s festival has moved to Palm Desert Civic Center Park. Each spring, the desert plays host to colorful wild flowers and due to the rain this year, it may be more beautiful than ever. In addition to great wildflower viewing and beautiful art, the festival features a Kids’ Zone, and a 5k fun run. There will be raffles, vendors, exhibitors, live music, as well as food and beverages available for purchase. They will be taking reservations for wildflower walks and bus tours throughout the month of March at the festival.

March 8 – Polo Under the Lights – experience the majesty of polo at the Empire Polo Grounds in a whole new light (or lack thereof). Admission and parking are free and the entrance is at Field 3 off of Avenue 50. Also enjoy regular polo matches on Sundays weekly from now until 3/24.

March 9 – Desert Youth Olympics at La Quinta High School from 9 – 11:00 a.m. gives kids an opportunity to compete in several different track and field events in hopes of winning a medal while learning about sportsmanship. There is a $10 admission fee and more information can be found at www.playinlaquinta.com.

March 23 – Mission LQ Rocket Launch at Monticello Park in La Quinta from 8 – 10:00 a.m. Learn, model and launch small power rockets in an event led by the La Quinta Rocketry Club. Free to participate.

March 30- Quick Quack Car Wash and CDMOD Present: The All-American Discovery Duck Pluck at The River at Rancho Mirage. Thousands of rubber duckies are released into The River in Rancho Mirage. Participants adopt a duck and each “duck plucked” reveals a prize winner. Proceeds benefit the museum and its programs for children in the valley.

April 3 – At Rancho Mirage Library the monthly Family Night Program continues with an opportunity for the family to create a tie-dyed bandana using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol. Event is free to the public and runs from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

April 4-8 – Circus Vargas presents “The Greatest of Ease,” circus as it should be seen…under the Big Top in Palm Desert at Westfield mall. Always fun for the entire family, Circus Vargas’ incredible new 2019 production highlights an amazing cast of world-renowned performers: death-defying acrobats, daredevils, aerialists, jugglers, contortionists, clowns, motorcycles and much more guaranteed to thrill children of all ages! April 6-20 – At the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, join the highly anticipated spring event of adopting butterflies on April 6; building their bungalows on April 13; and releasing them and celebrating Earth Day on April 20. It is a magical project that your kids will not forget.

April 17 – The Palm Springs Public Library presents the 6th Annual Family Fun Fest 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Palm Springs Stadium featuring games, crafts, animal encounters and more. The event is free and fun for the whole family. More info: www.palmspringslibrary.org

April 20 – Movies in the Park at the Cathedral City Festival Lawn featuring Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. The movie time is 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and they welcome chairs and blankets, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. There is also a concession stand for attendees’ convenience. This event is free of charge.

Most Sundays in April, Sunnylands continues their “Sundays at Sunnylands,” an invitation for families to enjoy games and sports and toys on the Great Lawn starting at 8:30 a.m.
