The Officer Friendly column is provided to Coachella Valley Kids by the Riverside Sheriff. This issue’s “Officer Friendly” is Varon Potter, Deputy Sheriff, Motorcycle Enforcement Officer

With the change in weather, now is the time to go outside and enjoy a few of the outside activities the Coachella Valley has to offer. Some of these activities include going to the park and having fun with your friends and family.

Whether you are at the park by yourself or with a group of people, here are a few tips to keep you safe:

  • If you’re at the park with a group of people, plan activities that will keep the group together or, at least, in the same general area.
  • If you are having a party in the park, remember to be considerate of other people enjoying the park at the same time, and keep your music at a respectable level.
  • If you’re there by yourself, avoid contact with strangers. If someone appears to be paying too much attention to you or your friends, notify an adult you know or contact the police.
  • Don’t use the restroom by yourself. Use the buddy system. Take a friend or family member with you.
  • If you have a cell phone, take it with you in case of an emergency.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Remember that the park is for everyone to enjoy, so please don’t leave a mess for someone else to clean up. Be courteous and pick up after yourself.

These are just a few tips to help ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time at one of the many parks located in the valley.

Have fun out there and enjoy the weather while it lasts – Officer Friendly!
