It is proven that afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and give working parents peace of mind. They help children achieve, grow, and reach their full potential, offering new learning opportunities that help students do better in school and in life. Children in afterschool programs attend school more often, get better grades, and are more likely to graduate. They are also less likely to use drugs or alcohol.

Demand for afterschool programs continues to grow. In 2014, 10.2 million American children participated in after-school programs. Another 19.4 million children would participate if a program were available. A majority of school-age children either are, or want to be, in an afterschool program.

Parents overwhelmingly agree that afterschool programs are providing a wide range of activities and enriching learning opportunities for their kids. They reduce the likelihood that youth will engage in risky behaviors and can help children gain workforce skills such as teamwork, leadership and critical thinking.

In the Coachella Valley, we have a non-profit organization who specifically provides financial support to children who have the desire to participate in afterschool activities. Founded in 2010, Rosie’s Kids was created to help all kids succeed. Centrally located in Indio, California, they primarily work with Coachella Valley children. They believe that every child should have the opportunity to participate in any activity without letting their financial situations keep them from accomplishing their dreams.

Rosie’s Kids CEO and Founder Rosie Welmas has been supporting kids in the desert for a long time prior to achieving nonprofit status. “The word got out about what I was doing, and I couldn’t sponsor all the kids that were knocking on my door. I really wanted to help them all, so I decided to take a friend’s advice and start fundraising for kids. That is why I started the organization.” Over the last nine years, Welmas and her team have helped over 500 boys and girls. Welmas shared, “The after-school programs we have worked with help kids stay out of trouble, make new friends and learn skills. They give them confidence, improved social skills and teach them about teamwork and passion. Some kids have no choice but to stay home alone because both parents work.”

Since Welmas’ mother passed a few years ago, she has been quietly supporting kids through her business, DC Promotions, a screen-printing and embroidery company, and with personal income. She also has facilitated fundraising through t-shirt sales with Direct To Garment printing.

Rosie’s Kids is currently planning a fashion show fundraiser with a date to be announced. For past events, Rosie’s Kids has been fortunate to receive support from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino who have offered their employees to volunteer at every event sponsored by the organization.

Rosie’s Kids also works with other nonprofit organizations and support programs who create opportunities for kids.
