Be SMART about Gun Safety

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is an organization of volunteers that is a part of the gun violence prevention movement. They support the 2nd amendment and know it goes hand in hand with common sense gun laws and a culture of safety. Moms Demand Action is not anti-gun, it is anti-gun violence and pro-gun safety.

Moms Demand Action is the counterweight to the gun lobby. They work to keep guns out of the hands of people with dangerous histories, including felons, domestic abusers and people with dangerous mental illnesses and supports sensible gun legislation.

Moms Demand Action developed the Be SMART awareness campaign several years ago to educate parents on steps they can take close to home to help prevent gun accidents and to have proactive communication about guns with children and teens.

“We recently had a shooting in Indio, where two teens were looking at a gun and one ended up dead,” said Jimmi Thomas, local leader for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “That didn’t have to happen. ALL of us can do better. That’s why Moms created the Be SMART program.”

Be SMART asks parents and caretakers to take five steps to help prevent shootings by children:

  • Secure all guns in your home and vehicles;
  • Model responsible behavior around guns;
  • Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes;
  • Recognize the risks of teen suicide; and
  • Tell your peers to be SMART

Thomas noted that he and other local Moms volunteers are available to give Be SMART presentations at schools, at PTA/PTO meetings, or even just groups of concerned parents. Parents can find more information at BeSMARTforKids.org.
